Abstract

Inflammation plays a pivotal role in both acute and chronic diseases, acting as a central mediator between infection and various non-communicable diseases. Recent research has highlighted the intricate interplay between inflammatory pathways, chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, and psychiatric conditions like depression and anxiety. This review explores the molecular mechanisms by which inflammation influences these complex interactions, emphasizing the role of cytokines, immune responses, and cellular stress. We critically analyze current literature on how infections, including viral and bacterial pathogens, can trigger or exacerbate systemic inflammation, contributing to the progression of chronic illnesses and psychiatric disorders. Additionally, we investigate how chronic diseases, and psychiatric conditions may reciprocally affect immune regulation, fostering a vicious cycle of inflammation. Understanding these relationships provides insights into novel therapeutic targets such as application of probiotics and natural products aimed at modulating inflammatory responses to improve outcomes in both physical and mental health.
